MANITOWOC, WI – March 12, 2008 – From Seattle to Miami, shipping heavy foodservice equipment from one point to another can be a nightmare. Manitowoc Ice has redesigned its packaging system to assure the safe arrival of every ice machine – no matter how long the trip or where the final destination may be.

Industry-wide concerns over the increase in equipment damaged in transit prompted Manitowoc Ice to enhance their own packing materials and processes. As a result, Manitowoc has begun shipping their 22" & 30" air and water cooled ice machines on wooden pallets. Other Manitowoc ice machine models will be converted over to the upgraded palletized packaging throughout 2008.

Along with strengthening the packaging materials to better protect products, Manitowoc's redesign incorporates a higher level of recyclable materials. The wood pallets are constructed out of recycled materials utilizing only 10% of the content from virgin or non-recycled wood. The covers and plastic banding used to wrap the ice machines can also be recycled. The outer recyclable corrugated carton is manufactured with up to 35% recycled content; adhesives used in the corrugating process are water soluble, making the carton very environmentally friendly. The improved packaging system significantly reduces transportation and other handling associated with the reshipments of replacement products and parts.

John Sara, product manager for Manitowoc Ice says, "The redesign will prevent inadvertent shifting of equipment in the shipping process, improve ease of handling by carriers and distributors, reduce freight claims, and ultimately get the ice machine to its destination without any shipping surprises or adverse affects on the environment."
